I am Kwon Man-hak, the 20th President of
the Korea Institute for National Unification.
Since its founding in 1991, KINU has been researching the core national tasks of peace on the Korean Peninsula, inter-Korean relations, and unification policy as the only national policy research institute in the Republic of Korea dedicated to unification and North Korea-related issues.
The present situation on the Korean Peninsula is highly difficult. Inter-Korean exchange and cooperation have been almost completely severed, while tensions and confrontation are intensifying. Peace between the two Koreas has emerged as an urgent task above all. This peace must be built by resolving inter-Korean hostility and mutually reducing military forces.
For the Republic of Korea to now transition to a new paradigm is an urgent, critical, and dangerous path.
KINU will become a research institute that takes the lead in reflecting the spirit of the times.
Grounded in innovative developmentalism, we will do our utmost to create “a better tomorrow than today” by pursuing serious and objective self-reflection, along with bold innovation.
We will also endeavor to fully perform our essential function and role as a compass for North Korea and unification policy.
